Shipwright & Co. is a boutique letterpress and design studio located in beautiful Napa Valley, California.
Our Process
Our process begins once you’ve reached out via our contact form and we’ve gotten the nitty gritty of timeline and budget out of the way. We’ll then set up a meeting in which we’ll talk about you, your partner, and especially your wedding – its location, style and the general vibe you’re imagining. We’ll spend some time getting to know each other to ensure that the finished pieces reflect who you are as individuals and your unique voice.
From there, we’ll outline an estimate for your project and send you a contract. Once we receive your signed contract and a 50% deposit, we’ll get to work! Next we create sketches of the design ideas we discussed in our meeting, which will show various ways the project could progress. Once the desired design vision is determined, we’ll begin to work it up digitally. You’ll have a chance to make edits from this point (2-3 rounds of edits are included with the design package) and when it’s all to your liking, we’ll have the final design made into plates specific to letterpress printing.
Finally, we’ll gather everything we need for your project (any custom-ordered paper or envelopes, dies, and of course, the plates made with your design) and get printing. Everything is printed in-house in our Napa County, California studio. We own two antique presses: a Chandler & Price letterpress circa 1911 and a Vandercook cylinder press circa 1965. For whichever press we use to create your project, each piece of paper is hand-fed into the press one at a time for each color, impression and side printed. It’s a time-consuming process, but we think the results are well worth it!
Our Story
Shipwright & Co. is a small letterpress and design studio located in the hills overlooking the Napa Valley. Our passion is to create custom stationery where the art of illustration and unique design meets the craft of fine letterpress printing.
Shipwright & Co. began in 2013 as a project dreamed up by pals Jessie Alberts and Jen Kruch when they stumbled upon an antique printing press and were hooked. In 2018 Jen and her family decided to pursue their lifelong dream of farming in northern Michigan, but Jessie continues to run Shipwright & Co. as a solo operation from the original shop at her home on Mount Veeder. We still love to work together though, and so from time to time Jen contributes her amazing illustration skills and creative ideas.
Our workshop is housed in one of the lovely old outbuildings on a former apple farm in Napa County. Surrounded by such beauty, we are very mindful of being environmentally-conscious in our print shop. Our house paper is completely tree-free, made from 100% recovered cotton fibers made for letterpress printing. We print with low-VOC rubber-based inks, use vegetable oil and other natural products to clean our press, and use recycled and low-impact materials whenever possible.
We are humbled to be included in the beautiful publication You're Invited! Invitation Design for Every Occasion, published by Gestalten as well as Big Day, by Viction Workshop
Our work has also been featured on Oh So Beautiful Paper, Once Wed, The Knot, Martha Stewart Weddings, and others
Work With Us
