We were thrilled when Emily & Jim approached us with this project. They had an idea for an invitation with multiple pieces that would attempt to illustrate the grandeur of Yosemite, where their winter wedding will take place.
For the save the date, the couple wanted something simple and personal. We had one of Emily and Jim's engagement photos printed on heavyweight paper, and then letterpress printed the details over it. For guests also invited to the rehearsal dinner, they received an additional card with hand-written details.
We were so excited to design the invitation! We created three layers of custom-illustrated pieces (with two die-cut layers) picturing the Yosemite landscape and mountains. When the first two layers are removed they reveal the main piece of the invitation, with the details of the event. We combined detailed line drawing with elegant hand lettering (and a bit of quirkiness) to strike a balance between campy and classy. Each of the pieces are printed in gray, green, blue, and white inks. The addition of smoky gray and soft blue paper, as well as deep blue and green envelopes, creates a really beautiful winter color palette.
The suite also contains lots of little details for the couple, including a custom map of Yosemite Valley with illustrations of scenic sites and event venues, the couple's wedding insignia featuring the Half Dome and their initials, and an RSVP with the Latin names of the food choices. One of our favorite details is the belly band with the John Muir quote, "It is by far the grandest of all the special temples of nature I was ever permitted to enter." We are honored that Emily and Jim chose us to create their unique and special wedding suite. It's one of our favorite projects so far, and we had so much fun designing and printing it!
Jen & Levi
This wedding suite was for one of our own! The entire suite was inspired by theDigby & Iona signet Jen & Levi chose as Levi's wedding ring. Each piece has alchemy-inspired designs, including the clasped hands featured on the ring which were also used in the save the date. Because the couple also included elements of handfasting in their ceremony, they felt the symbolism was especially perfect. Jen & Levi's wedding was in their backyard and very small, so they also sent out announcements to friends and family that didn't come. One of our favorite things ended up being the coasters, which were wrapped in vintage silk ribbon and given away to the guests afterward. The beautiful flowers are by our friend Jaime ofThe Monkey Flower Group.
Jaime & Ben
These Art Deco inspired invitations were a true collaboration with this couple. From the start they had a vision of their state flowers coming together to illustrate their union. The botanical direction was absolutely fitting since Jaime is a talented florist and Ben shares her passion for flora.
We love the color combination of vivid orange and sage green. Perfect for an autumn wedding. The real stars of this suite are the flowers themselves -- the California Poppy for her, a Napa native, and the Showy Lady Slipper for him and his homestate of Minnesota.
Ashley & Mike
Ashley and Mike met in New York and had many dates at Bemelmans Bar, named in honor of Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline children’s books. The walls are covered with his illustrations, featuring many animals frolicking in the woods. Ashley and Mike wanted to capture that magic and whimsy in their invitations, and we were super excited to oblige as we are big fans of classic children's book illustrations.
The save the dates capture the animals dancing at dusk on the barn where Ashley and Mike tied the knot, and the invitations move into a nighttime world, layered in three colors with the handwritten text filling up the full moon. These pieces are all about the details. Each animal and plant was chosen especially for each spot. We love their color scheme which was inspired by natural plant dyes.
Caitlin & Colin
When we first met Caitlin and Colin, we were told the story of Colin's proposal. Colin flies drones for aerial photography and is also a Miata enthusiast. He and 43 other Miata owners gathered in a parking lot to spell out "Marry Me?" while he flew the drone and Caitlin operated the camera. If you look closely at the lower left corner of the save the date, you'll see a Miata with Colin, Caitlin, and their son inside, watching the sunrise.
From the sunrise of the save the date, the invitation moves into dusk in a four-color scene of their wedding location in the mountains of southern California. The folded thank you card brings the setting into nighttime with a full sky of stars and a crescent moon. We loved drawing inspiration from the Ojai landscape and from the dreamy colors of the sunrises and sunsets.
Jenny & Miyuki
This wedding suite features a desert night sky with the couple's constellations Virgo and Pisces prominently glowing above the actual boulders at the site of their nuptials. Just like their save the date, the invitation, RSVP, and map are inspired by their wedding location just outside of Joshua Tree National Park.
Each piece of the suite was custom designed to reflect the couple's style, romance, and humor. The invitation and RSVP are letterpress printed in vivid teal, coral-rose, and warm grey. The map is conventionally printed in full color on matching pearl white paper.
Nicole & Heath
Nicole & Heath are an extraordinary couple. Nicole writes for the New York Times and Heath runs Metes & Bounds, a traveling table-to-farm dining experience in Northern California. When they came to us to design their custom wedding suite, we could tell we were going to make something truly unique. Each detail is a part of their story together. From the tiny pitcher of beer on the picnic table behind their favorite bar, the Alpine Inn (on the map), to their dog Homer (who makes an appearance on the invitation, the rehearsal dinner invite, and the return address), this suite captures who they are and their life together.
Caroline & Chris
Tiffany & VIctor
These quirky invitations and save the dates capture the adventurous and fun-loving spirit of the couple. Tiff and Vic are really into mythological creatures, and they let us get creative with an alien abduction and a Bigfoot sighting in one. We all share a deep love of the X-Files and had so much fun working on the save the date. The invitations combine a custom font with a dreamy vibrant desert scene, and an alien couple and Bigfoot couple spotting each other on opposite mountain tops. The RSVP illustration is a little nod to the Shel Silverstein poem "Boa Constrictor."
Crystal & Blue
Crystal and Blue live near Yellowstone and the Tetons and love being outdoors, camping, and the wildlife of the mountains. When they set the location for their celebration at a teepee lodge, we knew exactly what should be on the invitations. The night sky is abundantly full of stars where they live, and the Milky Way feels a little closer and clearer, too. The invitation illustration was inspired by posters for Dark Sky Parks which tend to feature the Milky Way and shades of Blue (Crystal's favorite color and now the name of her husband!). Blue has been living near and photographing the Tetons much of his life, and the view captured on the invites comes directly from a photo he took from their back porch.
Jamie & Justin
This custom design for Jamie & Justin was wholly inspired by their wedding location. When the couple first visited the venue they were struck by the beauty of the ancient oaks and the wildlife, namely the woodpeckers. We chose a pair of Nuttall's Woodpeckers not only because we knew they would look lovely in this paper cut-out motif, but because they mate for life.
Broeck & Adam
Taylor & Allen
We brought back the custom crest designed for this couple's save the dates for their matching wedding invitation suite in the woods of Southern California.
These invitations and RSVPs are full of small details carefully curated by the couple. The whimsical characters on the crest as well as the hand-lettering, buntings, and California poppies point to a fairytale romance.
Printed in teal and forest green, the invitations have the feel of a woodland celebration. The RSVPs are postcards printed on a lush kraft cardstock.
Valerie & Jon
Valerie and Jon wanted something simple and botanical for their vineyard wedding. First we made a detailed drawing of a clematis vine and then added a cheerful House Wren when we found out Valerie was an avid birder. We played with mixing a hand-drawn and a standard font to try and recreate the feel of a vintage seed packet. The overall spirit of this invitation suite reflects the bucolic vineyard setting for Val and Jon's wedding, as well as their personal aesthetic and love of the natural world.
